The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Early Alert concerning the Draeger VentStar Resus Neo disposable breathing circuit (model MP00310, UDI 04048675422358). This device is widely used in neonatal care to convey breathing gas to infants weighing up to 22 lbs. The alert was prompted by manufacturer-identified potential defects in the breathing circuit hoses.

According to the FDA and Draeger, the primary risk involves the breathing circuit hoses. Draeger reported that as of August 27, no serious injuries or deaths have been directly associated with this specific issue. However, the company identified that hoses may develop cracks or become detached. If a cracked hose is used, it may fall off or leak, resulting in restricted ventilation or delayed therapy. In a neonatal setting, this can lead to desaturation, hypoxia, or potentially patient death.
Draeger notified all affected customers on September 1, recommending the following actions:
- Carefully inspect the hoses for damages prior to use according to the product’s Instructions for Use (IFU).
- Discard products that show cracks or have a detached hose.
The FDA is currently reviewing the manufacturer's information and will keep the public informed as significant new information becomes available.

The FDA continues to evaluate the data regarding the VentStar Resus Neo breathing circuits. Healthcare providers and facilities are urged to review their inventory, identify any units with model MP00310, and implement strict inspection protocols before use. Further communications from both Draeger and the FDA are expected as the review progresses. No formal recall has been issued at this time, but the situation is being treated as a high-priority safety notice due to the potential for severe adverse outcomes in vulnerable neonatal patients.
